If you regularly use Google Photos on the web (rather than on your smartphone), you’ll be pleased to learn that the web version is getting a small UI change. This UI change means the menu options match those recently introduced to the mobile version of Google Photos, and is designed to make it easier than ever to find the content you’re looking for.
Google Makes Photos on the Web Easier to Navigate
In August, Google started rolling out a new UI for Photos on Android and iOS. This introduced Collections, a new destination that replaced Library, housing all of your albums, documents, and other content in one, easy-to-locate menu. Now, that same UI is rolling out on the web.
Thanks to the clever use of dropdown menus and new shortcuts, your content is better organized and easier to find. And all without taking up any more space on your screen.
Having used this new layout in the Android app for a couple of months, I do think it helps with navigation. Which is essential as we’re all not only taking more and more photos with our phones and cameras, but then storing them in the cloud to access later.
At the time of writing, Google hasn’t officially announced this change to Google Photos on the web. However, you can read about the thinking behind the new menu in this post on Google Photos Help published when the mobile change started rolling out.
A Small UI Change, but a Potentially Very Useful One
As someone who is deeply embedded in the Google ecosystem, Google Photos has quickly become an essential tool for me. And I’m sure millions of other people feel the same way. Unfortunately, the more photos you shoot and add to Google Photos, the harder it becomes to navigate them all, and find what you’re looking for. Especially if you’re past due to free up storage space on Google Photos.
Despite only being a small change, this should help with that. Not only because it organizes your content in a better way, but because it means the web version and mobile app now have matching menus, albeit tacked on to different UIs.
Now, all I need to do is go on vacation and put my own tips for shooting in big cities to good use.
